Barbara J. Huelat, AAHID / FASID / IIDA /EDAC is nationally recognized for work in evidence based healthcare design and serves as a healing environment consultant to healthcare facilities, product manufacturers, academia, institutions and the architectural design community. Her three decades of design experience cover virtually all types, components and sizes of domestic and international healthcare facilities. Barbara was a founding board member for the Symposium on Healthcare Design and former corporate vice president and chief of healthcare interior architecture at Ellerbe Becket in addition to a variety of other professional and academic positions. Currently is Past President on the board of regents for the American Academy of Interior Designers

Ms. Huelat with her husband founded the firm Huelat Parimucha in 1991 to provide Healthcare Design uniquely focused on Healing Environments. The firm continues to provide healing environments to leading healthcare facilities throughout the country and abroad. Huelat Parimucha Ltd, a healthcare design consulting firm, HPHD was formed and licensed in the State of Virginia in June 1991. Barbara J. Huelat, FASID and Joseph P. Parimucha, AIA are the firm’s principals. The Huelat Parimucha Ltd. office is located in the historic district of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia at 635 South Fairfax Street. HPHD offers the personalized service of a small firm with the expertise developed from years with large architectural / engineering firms. Design professionals offer specialized and unique planning, programming and design services to clients focusing on the healthcare environment.

Under Barbara's leadership Huelat Parimucha Ltd., Healing Design, is a leader in visionary healthcare design. The firm is nationally known and recognized for healing environments—providing evidence based design in the healthcare setting. The firm has been actively involved in the Center for Health Design, Pebble Projects, The Environmental Standards of Care, the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers, the American College of Healthcare Architecture and academic research through Evidence Based Design.

Evidence Based Design:
The firm has been actively involved in Evidence Based Design with the prestigious research with ER One at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. Preliminary research outcomes include Infection Protection, Positive Distractions, Ergonomics, Perceived vs. Actual Wait Times, and Staff Work Flow. This project is now in the 4th year of a Pebble Project.

The firm is one of five firms in the United States to receive this designation. Ms Huelat has authored two books: Healing Environments, Design for the Body Mind & Spirit, Healing Environments, What’s the Proof? and some 60 + healthcare journal articles on a variety of healing design topics including wayfinding, cancer center design, pediatrics, myths and reality, quality and costs and nature and healing. Barbara is a popular speaker; she lectures frequently on a spectrum of healthcare design topics. Ms. Huelat is a past and current member of ASID's Distinguish Speaker Series.

Barbara has been honored with numerous design awards for projects of excellence, as well as personal recognition for American Society of Interior Designers, Washington Metro Chapter Designer of Distinction, and the Humanities Design Award.
