OVERVIEW
Students are required to use at least one product from each of the sponsoring companies in their project entries. There are five (5) project categories. All projects will use the same provided building shell. The competition is being organized by the chapter’s Student Affairs Committee.

Our distinguished panel of judges is composed of designers with specialties in each project category. However, all will review and assess all entries, regardless of category/project type.

HEALTHCARE Ingrid Fraley, President of Design Services, Inc. has been active in the design of interior environments for over twenty seven years. Graduating from The American University in 1974, Ms. Fraley spent the next ten years in the work place as Director of Design for the Porter Group, Inc., Washington, D.C. and subsequently as the Director of Interiors for Sheretz, Franklin, Crawford, Schaffner, (SFCS) in Roanoke, Virginia. In 1984, she formed Design Services, Inc., to provide quality in design and value in the specification and procurement of finishes and furnishings. With offices in metropolitan Washington, D.C., turn-key services are provided to clientele involved in new construction, remodeling, and/or the renovation of senior living environments nationwide. Continuing to educate the public, clients, architects, designers and contractors has always been a priority. With a special interest in designing supportive environments for older adults, Ms. Fraley has been a guest speaker at many national conferences including ALFA (Assisted Living Federation of America), AAHSA (American Association of Homes and Services for the Aged), ASHE (American Society for Healthcare Engineers), and AIA (American Institute of Architects). In 2004, 2005, and 2006 Ms. Fraley was a juror for the National Association of Home Builders for their “50+ Senior Housing” design competitions. Ms. Fraley was appointed to the faculty of the Assisted Living Institute to teach environmental design for older adults in their Developer and Alzheimer’s/Dementia Care courses and participated as an advisor to The Assisted Living University in their development of the Assisted Living Training Systems (ALTS) manual. As 2009 Chair Emeritus for the Design for Aging Knowledge Community (DFA) of The American Institute of Architects (AIA), she continues to emphasize the importance of issues surrounding the design of supportive housing for older adults. Most recently, Ms. Fraley participated in Post Occupancy Evaluations of award winning senior housing projects to provide evidence based design research to the senior housing industry. With co-authors Jeffrey Anderzhon, FAIA and Mitch Green, AIA, these results were published by John Wiley and Sons. In February, 2009 she participated in a Congressional briefing on older Americans as part of AIA’s Grassroots Conference in Washington, D.C. Ms. Fraley currently serves on the ASID Council on Aging, the revision committee for the Facilities Guidelines Institute, and is co-chair of the Design for Aging Washington, D.C. chapter. |

| HOSPITALITY
Megan Koets is an NCIDQ-certified interior designer for ForrestPerkins. She earned her Bachelors of Science in Interior Design with a minor in Business from Western Michigan University. After graduating, Ms. Koets landed an internship in London, England at Christina Fallah Designs, a luxury hospitality and high-end residential interior design firm and was hired as a full-time Interior Designer. During her two years of living and working in London, she worked on the historic Shelbourne Dublin, a five-star hotel in Dublin, Ireland, as well as multiple private residences. This experience stimulated her passion in hospitality and residential design. Ms. Koets has worked on a number of hotel, multi-residential, and private residential projects while working for award-winning firms such as ForrestPerkins, RD Jones & Associates, and Mona Hajj Interiors. She is currently the STEP Team Leader for ASID Washington Metro Chapter. |

| OFFICE/COMMERCIAL
Mary Petrino is one of the most senior interior designers associated with Gruzen Samton, LLP. She has served as the principal designer on many large Federal interior design projects during her career of more than twenty-five years. Included among her significant projects is the U.S. EPA Headquarters at Potomac Yards, Arlington, VA, one of the most noteworthy Federal LEED certified facilities which achieved LEED Gold certification. In addition to work for EPA Headquarters Projects in the Federal Triangle Headquarters, she developed the furniture procurement standards for U. S. Customs and Border Protection which are still in use today. Recently, she served in leadership roles on the District of Columbia Courts ID/IQ team and the National Institutes of Health on the NIAID team. Highly respected among her peers, Ms. Petrino has worked with numerous Federal agencies as a contract employee, offering expertise and leadership in areas relating to Federal furniture procurement practices. In 2007, ASID awarded her the prestigious Chapter Medalist Award for outstanding service to the interior design profession. |

| RESIDENTIAL
Diana Johnson owns and operates Ashburn Interiors in Ashburn, VA. She is an Allied Member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), a Certified Professional Home Stager and Redesigner (HSR), and a member of the American Society of Home Stagers and Redesigners. In addition to home staging, Diana is actively engaged in residential design, commercial design and healthcare design. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Northern Virginia Community College, receiving an Associate’s Degree in Interior Design. While in school, Diana was very active with ASID. She was her college’s Chapter Vice President, President, and then Student Rep to the Board for the Washington Metro Chapter. |

| RETAIL/ENTERTAINMENT
With a career spanning both academic and professional spheres, Ms. Kuester has worked in the field of interior design for over 30 years. As a practitioner, Ms. Kuester worked as an interior designer for Design Group Architects in Lansing, Michigan and for John David Jones Architects in Akron, Ohio. As an academician, she helped create the first Interior Architecture Program at King Faisal University in Damman, Saudi Arabia and was appointed Head of the Interior Design Department at Mount Vernon College in Washington, D.C. Along with her husband, Tom Kuester, Ms. Kuester founded Austin Kuester, a design consultant firm specializing in the food and beverage, hospitality and retail industries. Working with Fortune 500 companies such as Hershey, Host, Marriott, Aramark and Sodexho, Austin Kuester has won numerous awards for design excellence. Active in ASID, Ms. Kuester has served on the Board of Directors of the Washington Metro Chapter, received numerous Presidential Citations and was named Designer of Distinction in 2000. During her years in academia, Ms. Kuester served as Regional Chairperson for IDEC and on the Board of Visitors for FIDER. |

| SUSTAINABILITY
A deep concern for how interior environments affect human health and performance has informed every facet of Linda Sorrento’s career as a sustainable design advocate, interior designer, researcher and educator. In 2011, Ms. Sorrento launched her consulting firm to focus on projects for improving occupant experience in and around green buildings. Prior to her consulting practice, Ms. Sorrento was the Senior Director of Education Partnerships and Director of LEED for Commercial Interiors for the U.S. Green Building Council. Ms. Sorrento is a principal developer of REGREEN, the USGBC/ASID green residential renovation and interior remodeling program. Ms. Sorrento practiced as a corporate interior designer for 29 years, cultivating a diverse work experience with major corporate clients and manufacturers. During that time, she was an assistant professor of interior design at George Washington University and Northern Virginia Community College. Ms. Sorrento is a Fellow of the American Society of Interior Designers, past ASID National Board of Directors, and past ASID Washington Metro Chapter President. She currently serves on the boards of the Healthy Building Network, National Academy of Environmental Design, Marymount University Reston Center and Northern Virginia Community College Interior Design Program. Ms. Sorrento holds a bachelor’s degree in interior design from Syracuse University and a master’s degree in interior design from Marymount University. |
